I actually felt pretty good today, considering what I did last night. Yeah, instead of going on to bed, I watched a movie that didnt end till about 12:30. It was an uplifting movie however, that gave me a good feeling, and a rise in mood.
The movie was Grand Canyon, brought to us in 1991 by the the Kasbans, the same people that brought us "The Big Chill" in 1983. Both "feel good" and human interest movies, but if memory serves me, this one actually is a bit more meaningful to me at this time. The cast includes Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, Steve Martin, Mary McDonnell, Mary-Louise Parker, Alfre Woodard, and a young Jeremy Sisko. It is basically the story of two groups of people, one white, one black, that throught a mishap become involved in each others lives. In fact, at one point Danny Glover's character asserts that one of the best things that had ever happened to him was as a result of the actions of the Kevin Kline character. From what could have been a minor incident became a live changing event for more than one of the people in the story. The lead is played by Kevin, and he is, at one point trying to fiqure out why he is doing what he is. His wife replys that it doesnt matter...why cant he just accept that the situation has changed and these "new" people are important to him, and he to them. She even suggests that maybe it was a miracle.
As you can tell by now, I really loved the movie and it meant a lot to me. It feeds very well into what my pastor often says on Sundays. We think of "miracles" as huge surprising occurances whereas some of them could be present in a day to day manner, and we simply overlook them. I have often had the experience of just being at the right place at the right time....and events and future events come about that would never have done so if I hadnt been at that spot precisely then. Being open to such occurances may be what allows some to live a "miracleous" life while others see life as being a matter of putting one foot in front of the other. Chance events very often add "color" to our existence.
Perhaps we need to start thinking of our day to day lives as truely miracleous. We never know the importance of a chance meeting often till months or even years later. As my pastor would say, God is with us on a daily basis. We often fail to notice because we are "too busy" looking for big "stuff", when the true miracle for us is in the small "stuff".
I strongly recommend that if any of you readers get a chance, you watch this movie...if you are open to it, you may get a real blessing.
